Health Care Heroes Highlight: What Can We Learn From The Covid-19 Pandemic?

When the severity of the Covid-19 pandemic became apparent to the Xpand team, we knew we wanted to support the frontline workers who were risking their lives every day to keep our communities safe. Because of the Xpand community, we were honoured to launch several initiatives supporting frontline workers as they worked to beat the odds day in and day out.

In addition to these support initiatives, we wanted to highlight the voices of some of these incredible healthcare heroes. The insights they gained, the hurdles they overcame, and the perspective they can share are invaluable and inspiring.

Patti Pilon

Director of Giving at The Salvation Army Toronto Grace Health Centre

It seemed as if life on so many levels came to a standstill in the early days of the pandemic. But at a hospital, that cannot happen. The people within its walls continued to need care, and frontline staff did not have the option to work from home.

Closing hospital doors to visitors was especially difficult. Loved ones could not be with family members who were hospitalized, even though support from family caregivers makes a meaningful difference.

Healthcare teams adapted quickly, supported each other and found new ways to stay connected to patients and families.

The experience reinforced the importance of community, empathy and caring for the people who care for others.
